The Gilas Pilipinas Women's team found South Korea a tough nut to crack, absorbing an 80-58 beating for its second loss in the 2025 William Jones Cup at the Taipei Peace Basketball Stadium, Friday, July 4.
A lackluster start proved costly for the Filipina dribblers as the South Koreans raced to an early lead and maintained control despite repeated comeback attempts from the Nationals.
The South Koreans, who are reigning Asian Games bronze medalists, also clamped down on the defensive end against Gilas star guard Vanessa De Jesus, who was limited to just three points on a measly 1-of-10 shooting from the field.
South Korea also simply got its offensive rhythm with Choi Isaem Choi firing 23 points including three three-pointers, Park Jihyun chipping in 17 points, and Kang Leeseul adding 12 points.
Kang and Park actually set the tone early, combining for 14 of South Korea’s 26 first-quarter points and outscoring the whole Gilas team, which had only 12 points during the same stretch.
Sumayah Sugapong paced Gilas with 16 points while Jack Animam tallied a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds – all of which, however, went down the drain as the Nationals slid to a 1-2 record.
