Alex Eala wraps up her grass court campaign and now shifts her focus to the hard court season following her maiden main draw appearance at the Wimbledon Championships.
The 20-year-old Filipina rising star is listed for the upcoming National Bank Open in Canada, a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA1000) event, set later this month which features a stacked field including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, No. 2 Coco Gauff and No. 3 Jessica Pegula, among others.
While nothing is official yet -- with the Wimbledon still ongoing -- the Canadian event could serve as a major springboard for Eala’s hard court campaign that included her goal of making a mark in the US Open scheduled Aug. 24 to Sept. 7.
Eala ended her grass season with a valiant first-round effort at Wimbledon, taking defending champion Barbora Krejcikova to three sets. She also competed in the doubles draw alongside German partner Eva Lys, but the pair bowed out in the opening round.
Despite the early exits, Eala took a moment to reflect on her journey in a social media post.
“Sometimes, the grass is greener on your own side,” she wrote. “See you all on the green next year!”
As of now, Eala sits at a career-high No. 54 in the WTA live rankings, which will be finalized at the end of Wimbledon.
