Alas Pilipinas missed out on a podium finish after falling to Chinese Taipei, 25-17, 26-24, 25-22, in the bronze medal match of the 2025 VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup on Saturday evening, July 5, at the Vinh Phuc Gymnasium in Vietnam.
After being outplayed in the opening set, the Filipina spikers attempted to mount a comeback in the next two frames but were unable to contain the relentless offense of the Taiwanese side.
The Nationals came close to extending the match in the third set, but a successful challenge on an MJ Phillips block touch gave Chinese Taipei a crucial 23-22 lead. That momentum shift sealed the win and left Alas Pilipinas in fourth place.
It surpassed the country's eight-place finish last edition when the National Lady Bulldogs represented the Philippines.
Team captain Jia De Guzman and Tia Andaya provided steady playmaking throughout the match, but the Nationals couldn't replicate their thrilling five-set victory over the same squad in the AVC Cup semifinals last month.
Alas Pilipinas opened the tournament with a straight-sets loss to host Vietnam, 20-25, 21-25, 21-25, before bouncing back with victories against Chinese club team Sichuan, 25-12, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15 and Australia, 25-13, 25-15, 25-20.
They showed composure in sweeping Thailand’s U21 squad, Est Cola, in the quarterfinals, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21, but were stopped by defending champion Korabelka in the semifinals, 16-25, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25.
Meanwhile, Elizaveta Nesterova steered Russia-based club Korabelka to a back-to-back championship after a hard-fought 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 20-18 final victory over host Vietnam.
Nesterova and Nguyễn Thị Bích Tuyền traded heavy blows in a thrilling fifth set, keeping their respective squads in contention. But it was Korabelka who emerged triumphant, silencing a stunned Vietnamese crowd inside the packed venue.
