Brig. Gen. Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, facilitated the “reunion” of Teng Mamo and Mutawali Simpal, both MILF field commanders in nearby Sultan sa Barongis town in Maguindanao del Sur province.
The peaceful settlement of the “rido” (clan war) was initiated by Lt. Col. Germen Legada, commander of the 33rd Infantry Battalion (IB), who has jurisdiction over Sultan sa Barongis.
Legada credited the Maguindanao del Sur provincial government, headed by Gov. Datu Ali Midtimbang, for the success of his efforts.
“Time and again, we have been hoping that (the) two warring MILF factions silence their guns for the benefit of peaceful settlement to their communities in Sultan sa Barongis,” he said in an interview on Thursday.
Since 2020, the two groups have exchanged fire multiple times, displacing civilians and disrupting economic and development activities in Sultan sa Barongis.
Major Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, lauded Catu and Legada for taking the initiative to bring about peace in Sultan sa Barongis. (PNA)
