Pagcor vows compliance with impending online gambling laws
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) announced its full commitment to intensifying efforts against illegal online gaming activities, acknowledging that it is the prerogative of lawmakers to propose legislation deemed beneficial to the public.
In a statement on Friday, July 4, the country’s gaming regulator noted its duty to comply with any relevant regulations once enacted by Congress and signed into law by the President.
While legislative discussions are ongoing regarding proposed bills on online gambling, Pagcor assured the public of its continued dedication to fighting the proliferation of unauthorized online gaming.
Pagcor stated that it will work in conjunction with “like-minded agencies and organizations” and with the support of “all gaming industry stakeholders” to address illegal online gambling. The agency underscored its immediate focus on curbing unregulated activities that pose risks to the public.
The statement by Pagcor comes at a time when lawmakers are actively pursuing stricter regulations on online gambling.
Several bills have been filed in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, aiming to address concerns such as gambling addiction, financial distress, and potential links to criminal activities. These proposed measures often include provisions for higher minimum cash-in requirements, bans on gambling sponsorships, and enhanced age verification.
Pagcor, which serves as both a regulator and operator, has been pushing for a transition to a purely regulatory role, with plans to privatize its casino operations. This strategic shift is intended to level the playing field for other operators and ensure continued growth and viability within the gaming industry.
As the legislative landscape for online gambling evolves, Pagcor emphasized its readiness to adapt and enforce new laws while maintaining its core mandate of responsible gaming and combating illegal operations.
