Another ranking solon from the previous Congress believes that Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez already has the 20th Congress Speakership in the bag.
“Our support for Congressman Martin Romualdez to be the next Speaker of the House remains strong as ever,” Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre said in a press conference Wednesday, July 2.
Acidre was part of the House leadership in the 19th Congress, being a former deputy majority leader. Romualdez was the House Speaker during that three-year period from 2022 to 2025.
So sure is Acidre that Romualdez would retain the top post in the House that he no longer needs to keep track of it.
“Sa totoo lang hindi ko na nga naisip ‘yung tungkol sa Speakership (Honestly I dont think about the Speakership anymore),'' he said.
“The question of Speakership has already been resolved many, many weeks ago,'' noted the Tingog Party-list congressman.
19th Congress leaders Quezon 2nd district Rep. David Jay-jay Suarez, a former deputy speaker; Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong and Manila 1st district Rep. Ernesto Ernix Dionisio, both former assistant majority leaders have earlier bared that 287 out of the 317 House members in the 20th Congress have signified their support for Romualdez.
“I don’t think this is any more a question that needs to be resolved,” Acidre said of the Speakership.
Acidre says that the focus now is on the first regular session, which includes tackling legislative priorities such as the national budget, economic reform bills and oversight matters.
Romualdez is on his third and final term as congressman. Known as a consensus-builder, he commands good will from his peers and is the president of the dominant political party Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD).
He is President Marcos' cousin.
