The Manila city government announced that it is facing disconnection threats from telecommunications and utility providers over unpaid dues amounting to P113,596,710.54.
This prompted Manila Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso to appeal for a two-month reprieve to prevent service disruptions in public schools, hospitals, health centers, and city offices.
The mayor disclosed the city's debt during a meeting with major service providers, including Meralco, Maynilad, Manila Water, PLDT, Globe, Smart, Converge ICT, and Cignal TV. Domagoso described the situation as a “fiscal crisis” inherited from the previous administration, citing a lack of available funds to cover outstanding obligations.
“Wala na ho kaming kapera-pera. As in literal. This is not about blame. Reality check na ito ng financial mismanagement — grave financial mismanagement ng gobyerno ng Maynila na inabutan ko (We have no money, literally. This isn’t about blaming anyone. It’s a reality check on the city’s grave financial mismanagement),” he said, adding that savings from unverified job order positions will be redirected to help settle the debt.
Meanwhile, the city government met with barangay leaders and the Manila Barangay Bureau to discuss the reimplementation of Executive Order No. 2, which enforces a curfew for minors, and Executive Order No. 3, mandating citywide cleanup and declogging operations every Saturday across all six districts beginning July 5, in preparation for the rainy season.
The mayor also convened with incoming health officials and hospital directors to lay out the city’s immediate health priorities under his administration.
