The Land Transportation Office (LTO) revoked the license of the jeepney driver in the viral road crash along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on April 13 that claimed the life of two college students who were on their way to military training.
LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II said the jeepney driver was also fined P2,000, the maximum penalty prescribed by law for reckless driving.
“I also approved the revocation of the driver’s license of the jeepney driver for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle,” said Mendoza.
The LTO investigation stemmed from the accident wherein the passenger jeepney was seen hitting another vehicle while travelling fast along Commonwealth Avenue.
As a result, the passenger jeepney overturned and resulted in the two students, who were on their way to attend ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), being thrown away. The two students died.
At least 16 other passengers of the jeepney were also injured.
In the decision signed by Mendoza, it stated that the jeepney driver clearly violated the rule on reckless driving not only for travelling fast but also for travelling outside the designated lane for public utility vehicles along Commonwealth Avenue.
Other circumstances that include failure to reduce speed on the downhill part of the road and the resulting road crash made the jeepney driver an improper person to drive a motor vehicle.
“Let this serve as a lesson about road safety and discipline. Because of this kind of bad behavior on the road, two lives were lost,” said Mendoza.
