DPWH: Bucana Bridge emerges as key link in Mindanao coastal transport corridor
By Trixee Rosel
Construction of the Bucana Bridge in Davao City continues under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), with major components—including stay cables and deck segments—nearing completion as part of efforts to boost regional connectivity in southern Mindanao.
Now being implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Bucana Bridge in Davao City serves as a vital connection in the government’s effort to enhance mobility between coastal and urban areas in southern Mindanao.
DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, in a report to Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, noted that the bridge is on track for full completion by the last quarter of 2025 and is poised to strengthen links between key communities in the region.
As of latest monitoring, the project is 92.3 percent complete, with construction activities proceeding within the projected schedule.
Also known as the Davao River Bridge, the four-lane, six-span extradosed structure stretches 480.2 meters across the Davao River, with a total project length of 1,340 meters including approach roads.
Funded through a China Aid Grant under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program, the ₱3.126-billion project forms part of the broader infrastructure partnership aligned with the Marcos administration’s “Bagong Pilipinas” vision.
A key milestone was reached on Jun. 26 with the installation of stay cables on all five piers, followed by the completion of structural connections, slope protection works, sub-base compaction, drainage lines, and fencing.
Preparatory activities are ongoing for the connection of pier 2 to pier 3 and pier 5 to abutment 1, with final deck integration scheduled in the coming weeks.
Once operational, the Bucana Bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve access between major districts, and serve as a strategic infrastructure asset for regional development.
