Vanessa De Jesus and Jack Animam joined hands as Gilas Women barged into the win column in the 2025 William Jones Cup with an 83-66 rout of Thailand at the Taipei Peace Basketball Stadium Thursday, July 3.
The Nationals’ top scoring weapons presided over a huge second half explosion, allowing Gilas to pull away for good and claim their first win after dropping their opener against host Chinese Taipei.
Animam had 15 of his 23 points in the last two quarters where the Nationals turned the tables from a 36-37 deficit at the break to a double-digit advantage for the most part of the second half.
The 6-foot-5 center had 14 rebounds to go with two assists and two steals while De Jesus also finished with 23 points built on three triples to go with six rebounds and three assists. Sumayah Sugapong was the other double-digit scorer with 11.
Gilas improved to a 1-1 record while Thailand remained winless through two games.
Supavadee Kunchuan tried to carry the fight for the Thai but her 16 points and eight rebounds were just not enough to lead her team to its first win.
