Cardinal David urges bishops to stay steadfast amid ministry challenges

Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David called on his fellow bishops to remain faithful in their mission despite the struggles that often come with pastoral leadership.
In a homily delivered on July 1 at Tagbilaran Cathedral in Bohol, David acknowledged the emotional and spiritual burdens that can arise within the episcopacy, including conflict, betrayal, and disappointment.
David, who serves as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and bishop of Kalookan, urged his fellow prelates not to allow hardship to lead to bitterness or discouragement. 
“Dear brother bishops, in our own ministry, there will always be regrets, conflicts, betrayals, disappointments—even within our own brotherhood,” David said. 
“May these not turn our hearts to stone,” he added.
He encouraged the bishops to keep their focus on Christ as the source of strength and direction.
“When the temptation comes to keep looking back. Look instead at Christ, who is with us in the boat,” David said.
He also reminded the bishops that vulnerability is part of the journey of discipleship. 
“May our hearts dare to stay both frightened and free—not frozen like pillars of salt, but alive, trusting in Him who calms the winds and the waves,” he said.
David concluded by urging bishops to keep Christ at the center of their ministry and to lead by example. 
“Let us fix our gaze on him who is our true destination—and lead our people to do the same,” he said.
The homily was part of the bishops’ four-day retreat, which also serves as a national consultation on the implementation of synodality in the Church. 
The event, hosted by the Diocese of Tagbilaran, includes bishops, clergy, consecrated persons, and lay delegates from across the country.
The retreat precedes the CBCP’s biannual plenary assembly, scheduled for July 5-7 in the Diocese of Talibon. 
The gathering will include the election of new CBCP officers and a discussion on a proposed framework for a national program on synodal transformation.
