Akbayan Party-list has challenged President Marcos to certify as urgent in the 20th Congress the measure increasing workers' minimum wage, as the fight to achieve this elusive benefit continues.
On the heels of solons' failure to pass the measure at the Bicameral Conference Committee level in the previous 19th Congress, Akbayan lawmakers on Tuesday, July 1, filed House Bill (HB) No. 766 and underscored the need to pass it in order to help workers survive the skyrocketing prices of basic goods and services.
HB No.766 or the proposed Wage Hike for Minimum Wage Workers Act pushes for a P200 monthly increase--the same amount sought by the House of Representatives in the 19th Congress. The Senate pushed for a lower P100 wage hike.
And although the regional wage board just approved a P50-wage increase in the National Capital Region (NCR), Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña still did not find it enough.
“Kakarampot itong halaga at di makikinabang ang mga non-NCR workers. Kung seryoso ang DOLE (Department of Labor and Employment) dapat suportahan nila ang panawagan naming gawing priority measure ng Pangulo ang wage hike (This is a measly amount, and non-NCR workers won't benefit from it. If DOLE is serious, it should support our call for the President to make this wage hike a priority measure), he said.
“Kung gustong bumawi ng Malacañang dapat i-certify as urgent ng Pangulo ang wage hike (If Malacañang really wants to make up to the people, the President should certify this as urgent), he added.
Other lawmakers also filed measures for a wage increase when the 20th Congress opened on June 30.
They were Cavite 1st district Rep. Jolo Revilla, TUCP Party-list Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza, ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio, and Kamanggagawa Party-list Rep. Eli San Fernando.
Revilla and Mendoza filed HB No. 78 and HB No.88, respectively, to enact a P200 wage hike; while Tinio filed HB No.202 which sought a P1,200 living wage for private sector.
On the other hand, San Fernando, a neophyte in the House of Representatives, filed HB No. 94 or National Minimum Wage Act, which seeks to abolish the provincial wage system and establish a single, unified minimum wage nationwide.
