Atienza warned those who might pursue self-interest during their term.
“To those who are here seeking reform, I will be the best person who will stand by you. But to those who are here seeking personal gains, you will be greatly, greatly disappointed with me.”
Delivering her inaugural SOCA, Atienza began by recalling how she once sat as a spectator in the same chamber where her father served three decades ago.
“Thirty years ago, I was merely a spectator here, watching my father lead in this very hall. Today, I preside in the same place, guided by memories and a deep sense of duty,” she said
She shared that observing the early political careers of current council members helped shape her understanding of public service.
Atienza emphasized the power of the City Council to shape lives through ordinances and resolutions, adding that such power must be exercised responsibly.
The vice mayor declared her intention to prioritize the voices of young people, particularly millennials, in her term.
She underscored the need for servant leadership and reminded fellow councilors of their shared duty to the public.
Atienza also expressed her appreciation to Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, whom she credited for choosing her as his running mate.
She revealed that she initially asked for time to pray before accepting his offer and later supported his vision after receiving what she believed was divine affirmation.
Atienza also called on her fellow councilors to begin the process of healing, acknowledging the divisive nature of the recent elections.
Meanwhile, Atienza enumerated specific sectors whose needs she pledged to represent in the Council: senior citizens, those with relatives to support, solo parents, the LGBTQ+ community, millennial workers, students, and those in need of livelihood.
“I hope that they can feel that the government sees the hardship they go through every day.”
Atienza concluded by introducing the mayor to the council and guests, signaling the start of their joint governance in Manila’s 13th City Council.
