BACOLOD CITY – A 53-year-old dump truck driver involved in a road accident that killed seven job order employees in Barangay Guimbalaon, Silay City, Negros Occidental last week has been released from hospital arrest.
Police Lt. Col. Mark Anthony Darroca, Silay police chief, said that none of the victims or their families have indicated plans to file charges against the driver.
Darroca said the driver, who was confined at Teresita Jalandoni Provincial Hospital in Silay City, is now recuperating at home.
An expert mechanic has inspected the vehicle involved in the crash, though the official report is still pending, according to Darroca.
The truck reportedly suffered brake failure before it overturned, pinning some passengers underneath.
The truck was transporting 24 individuals from a tree-planting activity when the incident occurred on June 27.
Seven injured victims have been discharged from the hospital, while 10 others remain in various medical facilities.
Funeral arrangements for the fatalities are currently being finalized by their families.
The Silay City government is providing financial aid to the victims.
On Monday, June 30, city officials led by Mayor Joedith Gallego held a Mass at the accident site to honor the lives lost and offer strength, healing, and comfort to the bereaved families.
In this time of sorrow, Silay reaffirms its compassion, unity, and unwavering commitment to support and uplift the community in the face of tragedy, according to the local government.
Third district Rep. Javier Miguel Benitez expressed support to the city government of Silay in pursuing a thorough and impartial investigation to identify the root cause of the fatal incident.
“We are one with the people of Silay City in mourning the loss of at least seven victims and other injured individuals,” he said in a statement.
Benitez said his office is committed to extend help to the victims and their surviving families in all possible opportunities.
“This is a time to stand by each other's side and allow solidarity to condole with our grieving hearts,” he added.
