Rain or Shine hopes to break the trend of futility against TNT in what it deems a crucial Game 4 of their best-of-seven PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals series at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, July 2.
After finally scoring the breakthrough 107-86 win in Game 3, the Elasto Painters now look to exorcise the ghost of their 4-1 series losses in the past two conferences against the Tropang 5G in the contest scheduled at 7:30 p.m.
Setting the table to the clash is the equally entertaining encounter between Ginebra and San Miguel, with the Kings also holding a 2-1 advantage
In their last two playoff meetings, TNT has always taken the first two games of the series before ROS gets the third contest. The Tropa will then score back-to-back victories to complete a gentleman sweep of the Elasto Painters in both the Governors Cup and the Commissioners Cup.
“Subukan naming ibreak yung trend na iyon,” said ROS head coach Yeng Guiao. “Wednesday is the big game. We feel if we can breakthrough, kasi pag series namin 4-1 kami ng 4-1 kami, at least, napantay na namin yung level nung dalawang playoffs namin sa kanila.”
“Pag nanalo kami sa wednesday ibig sabihin na improve na kmi tingnan natin kung makakarating sa ganun,” he added.
This could be the best chance for ROS to finally get even in the series especially with RR Pogoy’s participation in the contest still doubtful due to a hamstring injury. The Tropa, however, still have Calvin Oftana who had already proven that he can carry his team to a win, evident in TNT’s Game 2 win.
Meanwhile, San Miguel is also hoping to tie things up against Ginebra especially with main man June Mar Fajardo finally getting the short but much-needed respite after sustaining a calf injury in Game 1.
Fajardo admitted that small tears were seen on his calf, and while he is expected to play through it, he will need more help from the rest of the Beermen especially from guys like CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter, Juami Tiongson, Don Trollano and Mo Tautuaa.
In contrast to the Beermen, the Kings have been getting contributions from across the board with RJ Abarrientos and Jamie Malonzo sharing the spotlight in Ginebra’s 100-90 Game 3 win.
Of course, Scottie Thompson and Japeth Aguilar will remain the focal point of attack for the Kings but guys like Stephen Holt, Jeremiah Gray, Maverick Ahanmisi should all be able contributors if given the chance.
