Early on in their terms, Bukidnon 3rd district Rep. Audrey Zubiri challenged her fellow House members in the 20th Congress to ''leave behind a legacy of integrity''.
Zubiri, wife of Senator Juan Miguel Migz Zubiri, asked this of the solons when she spoke at the House plenary hall last week to cap their three-day executive course on legislation in preparation for the start of the 20th Congress in July.
The neophyte congresswoman saw her completion of the course as “a beginning of deeper commitment to better service that is informed, disciplined and principled.
The real test of our learning will not be in the halls of this institution but in the lives of those we serve, reckoned the Mindanaoan.
She challenged her fellow attendees to ''leave behind a legacy of integrity and legislation that uplifts, unites and endures''.
Zubiri said that the executive course helped her realize the deeper purpose behind lawmaking.
“Physically, how to translate needs into policy, how to work with clarity and constitutional integrity, how to scrutinize budgets, interpret data, and most importantly, how to legislate with conscience,” she said.
A total of 41 rookie and returning House members comprised the first batch of the three-day executive course.
House Secretary General Reginald Velasco, who gave inputs in the executive course, congratulated the incoming lawmakers. He impressed upon them the purpose of legislation.
“It is also about steering the nation’s future through thoughtful debate, exacting accountability from the government, responsible and timely decision-making, and a deep sense of care for the welfare of the people that you serve,” Veasco said.
The course was organized by the House, in partnership with the University of the Philippines College of Public Administration and Governance - Center for Policy and Executive Development.
