The 39-member Philippine delegation who competed in the STEMCO International Mathematics Competition in Singapore.
Filipino math prodigies are gearing up for at least nine international mathematics competitions in the third quarter of the year.
Officials of the non-government Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which mentored the math wizards, and the math-gifted students have expressed their confidence that their winning streak in global contests would continue.
The Philippine math team has won 139 medals so far this year from tilts in Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Singapore.
Last week, the team delivered an impressive performance in the STEMCO International Mathematics Competition, held at the National University of Singapore, taking home 14 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze medals, and six special awards.
All 39 members of the team bagged medals in the 12-nation event.
Aside from host Singapore and the Philippines, teams from Russia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Vietnam, Georgia and Mongolia also took part in the STEMCO finals.
Meanwhile, MTG head Dr. Simon Chua announcef that the following contests are lined up for the Filipino numbers aces: Po Leung Kuk Primary Math World Contest, International Hope Cup Peak Challenge and International Huo Luo Geng Cup, all in Hong Kong; World Math Olympiad and 3D Pan Pacific Math Contest, both in Malaysia; Singapore International Mathematics Competition; Asia International Math Olympiad in Japan; International Math Wizards Challenge in Thailand and the Macau Lotus Math Contest.
Philippine team members had earlier taken MTG's 12 Saturdays math workshop, which drew over 3,000 students nationwide, and the rigorous four-day Young Mathematicians In- House Intensive Training Program.
The best of the bunch were then chosen and assigned slots in different teams that will represent the country this year in math competitions abroad, according to Chua.
