Petro Gazz overcame the gritty challenge of Galeries Tower to carve out a hard-fought 25-23, 25-21, 26-24 victory in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour at the Batangas City Sports Center on Sunday, June 29.
The Angels leaned on the fiery performance of veteran Myla Pablo, who delivered all 14 of her points on attacks to help the team break into the win column following a tough five-set loss to the Nxled Chameleons the previous day.
The win leveled Petro Gazz’s record at 1-1.
Jonah Sabete and Joy Dacoron also provided key contributions, combining for 20 points to help fend off the relentless Galeries Tower squad.
Setter Djanel Cheng played a pivotal role in orchestrating the offense, dishing out 16 of the team’s 23 excellent sets while adding two points of her own.
“We’re really happy with the win. We gave it our all, and I’m grateful for the trust the coaches placed in us,” said Dacoron, whose presence at the net and from the service line proved crucial despite a late-set miscue.
Veteran Aiza Maizo-Pontillas chipped in seven points, while Marian Buitre, a former UP standout, added five markers as Petro Gazz displayed balanced scoring and composure down the stretch.
The match lasted one hour and 38 minutes, with Petro Gazz leaning on its firepower, tallying 43 kills and six aces to tame the Highrisers.
Ysa Jimenez and team captain Roselle Baliton led the Galeries Tower charge with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Rookie Jean Asis, who impressed with a team-best 16 points in their previous outing, struggled with consistency this time, rotating in and out of the lineup.
Jimenez and Baliton were the only double-digit scorers for Galeries Tower, which fell short despite a valiant effort.
The Highrisers slipped to 0-2 following a four-set defeat to Choco Mucho on Saturday, June 28.
In the nightcap, Nxled added Choco Mucho to its growing list of fancied victims with a 25-20, 26-28, 27-25, 25-22 victory that catapulted them straight to Pool A lead.
It was the second straight victory for the vastly improved Chameleons with the first one coming against arguably the biggest fish of all—reigning All-Filipino Conference champions Petro Gazz Angels.
The franchise, which never finished better than eighth place since it joined the pros two years ago, is so impressive right now that its record now matches Creamline and Cignal, who share No. 1 in Pool B.
And at the center of it all was this super rookie named Lyann de Guzman, who continued to dish out impressive performances including a masterful 24-hit performance on this one.
Chiara Permentilla chipped in 19 points while Jovelyn Fernandez added 14 points.
The Flying Titans dropped to 1-1.
