House Speaker Martin Romualdez had nothing but praise for tennis star Alex Eala despite her heartbreaking defeat at the Lexus Eastbourne Open final.
Specifically, Romualdez hailed Eala's display of humility in her immediate response following her loss, which the former said epitomized the Filipino spirit.
''In defeat, she showed true greatness when she said, ‘I’ll work hard to do more,’” noted the leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives.
“That quiet resolve speaks for millions of Filipinos who, like Alex, strive harder every day to rise, to fight, and to uplift our nation,” Romualdez said.
According to him, Eala’s courage and calm under pressure resonated deeply with the Filipino people, many of whom saw in her journey the same determination that fuels their own struggles and aspirations.
“Alex Eala may have lost a match – but she won a nation’s heart,” the Speaker pointed out.
Romualdez said that hrough her performance, the 20-year-old Eala reminded the world of the Filipino spirit – resilient, driven and filled with potential.
“She reminded us that the Filipino spirit is bold, relentless and destined for greatness,” he said.
Addressing the tennis star, Romualdez said: “Mabuhay ka, Alex. The entire nation stands proud because of you.''
Eala’s outing in the Lexus Eastbourne Open marked the first time a Filipino reached the final of a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) tournament.
The WTA is the global governing body for women's professional tennis and organizes and runs the WTA Tour, the main professional tennis tour for women.
“Alex Eala has done more than just play the game – she has made history and stirred the soul of a nation. As the first Filipino to reach a WTA Tour final, Alex has brought the Philippines to the global stage of tennis,” Romualdez added.
