TNT is enjoying a 2-0 lead but coach Chot Reyes is determined to guard his wards against complacency when his team tries to pin Rain or Shine on the ropes in Game 3 of their best-of-seven semifinals series in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum, Sunday, June 29.
The Tropang 5G is coming off an epic come-from-behind 113-105 overtime win over the Elasto Painters – a victory that not only gave the team a comfortable series lead but also all the momentum heading into the crucial contest at 5 p.m.
Quickly following suit in the second game at 7:30 p.m. is the clash between San Miguel and Ginebra – two teams raring to break a 1-all deadlock in their own race-to-four affair.
But while TNT came through in the extra period in Game 2, Reyes stressed his team cannot commit the same mistake in Game 3 when the Tropang 5G seemingly relaxed a bit when it built a double-digit spread early in the final frame.
“Every win in a semifinals series is huge but like Calvin (Oftana) said, we haven't won anything yet. We only got the advantage, but you see how quickly those advantages can disappear if we don't take care of them,” Reyes stressed.
“I thought we got a good control of the game late in the third and early in the fourth but we had uncharacteristic turnovers that gave them the momentum to come back. The same thing with this series. You cannot relax whatever the series score is, we have to continue,” he added.
Unfortunately for TNT, it is expected to miss the services of RR Pogoy, who played limited minutes due to a hamstring injury. That means bigger responsibility will be put on the shoulders of Oftana, who fired 39 points in Game 2 including the three free throws that sent the game to overtime.
Meanwhile, the Beermen are looking to power through the injury of June Mar Fajardo when it tries to take the series control from the Kings in Game 3 of their own semis affair.
While the eight-time MVP played limited minutes off the bench while managing a calf injury, the rest of San Miguel in veteran gunner Marcio Lassiter, backup big man Mo Tautuaa and bench sparkplug Kris Rosales all stepped up in the 100-83 Game 2 win.
“SMB is not only June Mar’s game eh. Lagi nating sinasabi ang strength ng team ay na kay June Mar but let’s not forget that the strength of June Mar is his teammates and it’s very evident naman,” said San Miguel head coach Leo Austria.
For the part of Ginebra, Japeth Aguilar and Scottie Thompson should be eager to bounce back after being limited to single-digit scoring in the Game 2 defeat.
