Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco has denied being sought as a witness by the camp of Vice President Sara Duterte in the latter's upcoming impeachment trial.
''Nope,'' said Tiangco in a message Saturday morning, June 28, when asked if Vice President Duterte has sent her feelers for this purpose.
During the mid-term elections last May, Tiangco served as campaign manager of the administration-backed Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate. Alyansa went up against the opposition ticket that was endorsed by Vice President Duterte.
Tiangco's name was floated in a press conference Friday as a possible witness for the defense team. This, as he has slammed his House colleagues' pursuit of the impeachment complaint, which he has claimed hurt the Alyansa bets' chances in the polls.
The veteran solon from Navotas has said that President Marcos' ''political capital was sold'' through the impeachment and it was a way for the solon-signatories to access project funds under conditional release.
At least 215 House members signed the impeachment complaint last Feb. 5, six days before the start of the campaign period. Tiangco didn't sign complaint, which was promptly transmitted to the Senate.
In recent interviews, Vice President Duterte has alleged that the congressmen signed the impeachment complaint in exchange for monetary compensation. This has been denied by ranking solons.
