The TNT Tropang Giga may have pulled off an 113-105 overtime escape against Rain or Shine for a 2-0 lead but it lost one of its premier scorers in the process on Friday night, June 27, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Veteran gunner RR Pogoy aggravated a hamstring injury he has been nursing, forcing his team to play without him in the second half and in overtime in the Game 2 of the best-of-seven semifinals series in the PBA Philippine Cup.
Pogoy said he pulled his hamstring while attempting for a layup early in the second quarter.
“Nakakalakad naman ako, pero medyo may nakita lang. So pahinga muna,” said Pogoy, who still finished with 11 points in 11 minutes of play.
“Game 2 ng quarters nafi-feel ko na. Game 1 meron na. Tapos kanina na-feel ko na. Nung nag-timeout and pagbalik, pag layup ko na-feel ko na na walang lakas,” he said.
The injury was a huge blow for Pogoy, who has been playing well through the playoffs. He is averaging 25.3 points before Game 2.
Pogoy is the latest victim of the injury bug at the camp of TNT with Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac out with knee and hip flexor injuries. Jielo Razon is also still out of commission while Brian Heruela hurt his ankle in the semifinals.
Even Jordan Heading is trying to play through a nagging back issue.
Stepping up big was Pogoy’s ‘amigo’ Calvin Oftana, who came to the rescue with 39 points on an efficient 59.1 percent shooting clip.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanya, ‘Amigo, wala ako, di ko na kaya bumalik, ikaw na bahala.’ Sabi nga niya, ‘Ako na bahala sa’yo,’” Pogoy said lightheartedly following their semifinal escape.
Pogoy also credited the crew for answering the call, despite playing short-staffed with a growing list of sidelined teammates. TNT got solid contributions from its bench with Mike Nieto, Kim Aurin and even Almond Vostotros delivering quality minutes.
“Lahat ng players nag-step up talaga. Ganyan naman talaga kami [sa team]. Ilan na nga ‘yung injured [players] namin, di ba? Ganun talaga,” he added.
Pogoy said he is doubtful to play in the crucial Game 3 showdown that is set for Sunday, June 29, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
