FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri slew top seed International Master S Aswath of India in the seventh and last round to snare the silver medal in the blitz event of the Asian Juniors Chess Championships in Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka on Friday, June 27.
The 19-year-old Nouri actually wound up joint first with IM Nayaka Budhidharma of Malaysia, who turned back compatriot Genivan Genkeswaran, to finish with identical 6.5 points but the Filipino bet settled for the runner-up honors due to inferior tiebreak score.
The reigning UAAP blitz champion, whose campaign is being backed by the Philippine Sports Commission through commissioner Ed Hayco, clinched his second medal after capturing the gold in the rapid side the day before.
Nouri is seeking a third podium finish as he is currently in the 43-player logjam at first in the premier nine-round standard event following a Round 1 victory over Yeshan Perera of Sri Lanka.
But more than a medal, Nouri is eyeing a Grandmaster norm that he will earn if he tops the event.
