Rain or Shine guard Gian Mamuyac owned up to his costly error late in regulation of his team’s 105-113 overtime Game 2 loss to TNT in the best-of-seven semifinals of the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup on Friday, June 27 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

With the Elasto Painters up by three in the waning seconds, fouled Calvin Oftana in an effort to stop the Tropang 5G’s fastbreak attack since Rain or Shine still had one foul to give.

Mamuyac, however, fouled Oftana while attempting a triple, giving TNT the three free throws that tied the score and eventually sent the game to an extra period.

“I was just trying to be smart, but it backfired. May fouls to give kami and kung na-foul sana nang hindi gathered, naka-set sana defense namin and more chances maka-stop kami,” said Mamuyac who admitted that Oftana got the better of him in that sequence.

“Galing din ni Calvin, na-timingan niya. Alam kasi niya eh,” added the third-year guard.

Mamuyac actually had the chance to redeem himself when the ball found its way to his hands in the final Rain or Shine possession although he came up short on his three-point attempt.

“I thought it was gonna go in, kaso short nga lang. Diretso naman eh. And also, a great play designed by Coach Yeng,” Mamuyac said of the last play.

Despite the painful loss, the two-way guard is taking the miscue in stride as he focuses on bouncing back and helping the Elasto Painters avoid a 0-3 deficit in the series.

“As a player, siguro I have to bounce back kasi and learn from it kasi medyo costly yun nangyari doon and yun weight ng loss namin sa series na ito. But again hindi pa naman kami out. It’s a seven game series for a reason,” he stressed.
