German takes oath as new Pateros mayor

Gerald Sangalang German, 45, took his oath as the new mayor of Pateros before outgoing Mayor Miguel Ponce III on June 27.
“Sa pagpapala ng ating Dakilang Lumikha at sa harap ng taumbayan ay naisagawa na po natin ang Panunumpa ng Tungkulin bilang bagong Punongbayan ng Pateros na pinangasiwaan ng ating iginagalang, minamahal, at iniidolo na si Mayor Ike Ponce (With the blessing of our Great Creator and in front of the people, we have taken the Oath of Office as the new Mayor of Pateros, presided over by our respected, beloved, and idolized Mayor Ike Ponce),” German posted on Facebook.

He added, “Maraming salamat pong muli sa inyong lahat at nawa'y magsama-sama at magtulung-tulong po tayo patungo sa adhikain na maipagpatuloy ang mabuting pamamahala at kaunlaran sa mahal nating bayan at maisakatuparan ang mithiin na Gobyernong Maayos at Gobyernong Bilis-Kilos sa Bayan ng #GoGoPateros (Thank you again to all of you and may we come together and work together towards the goal of continuing good governance and development in our beloved town and realize the goal of Good Government and Fast-Moving Government in the City of #GoGoPateros).”
German won in the May 12 national and local elections, garnering 16,459 votes (55.87 percent) against rival Ronaldo Miranda who received 13,001 votes (44.13 percent).
“Sa paglipat natin sa panibagong pahina ng ating kasaysayan ay baon ko pa rin sa aking kaisipan ang tinuran ni Dr. Jose Rizal na ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan (As we move to a new page in our history, I still keep in mind the words of Dr. Jose Rizal that those who do not know how to look back where they came from will not reach their destination),” said German.
Also attending the ceremony was former Pateros mayor Rosendo Capco.
“Kung kaya't ganoon pong kataas ang respeto ko kay Mayor Endo Capco na unang nagtiwala sa akin bilang Konsehal sa kanyang partido at kay Mayor Ike Ponce na aking kasama sa.una kong laban hanggang makatapos ng tatlong termino bilang Pangalawang Punongbayan. Maraming salamat po sa lahat ng mga aral na ngayon ay aking gagamiting lakas at sandata sa pamumuno ng ating bayan (That is why I have such high respect for Mayor Endo Capco who first trusted me as a Councilor in his party and for Mayor Ike Ponce who was my partner in my first fight until I finished my three terms as Vice Mayor. Thank you very much for all the lessons that I will now use as strength and weapons in leading our town),” added German.
German’s political career started in 1996 when he became the Sangguniang Kabataan chairman and served until 2002.
In 2002, he was elected barangay kagawad. In 2004, he won as municipal councilor of Pateros and served for three terms until 2013.
After completing his terms, he ran for vice mayor in 2013 and won, serving for nine years until 2022.
In 2022, Ponce appointed German as municipal administrator. German ran for mayor as Ponce was in his third and last term as mayor.
