CEBU CITY – A policeman was fatally shot while responding to an armed person alarm in Danao City, northern Cebu province at noon Friday, June 27.
Police Patrolman Mark Gomer Ornopia Sr., an operative of the Danao City Police Station, died due to a bullet wound in the head.
The victim was detailed in a regional trial court in Barangay Poblacion.
Police said that while the victim was in his post, he was alerted about an armed person.
The suspect broke into a convenience store and took the .38 caliber revolver service firearm of a security guard.
He and personnel of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology who were escorting an inmate for a court hearing responded to the alarm.
Ornopia and jail personnel arrived in the area but the suspect opened fire and hit the policeman in the head.
The victim's companions returned fire and killed the suspect.
Ornopia was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Police are conducting follow-up investigation.
The identity of the gunman was not immediately known.
