The Makati City Police have arrested three thieves wanted for stealing the fiber-optic cables of the CCTV cameras of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) installed at the Guadalupe overpass in Makati City, Makati Police OIC Col. Reycon Garduque confirmed on Friday, June 27.
Garduque said the suspects, identified as alias Vincent, alias John, and alias Darwina, returned to the area to steal CCTV cables again but failed to notice the patrolling police officers at the overpass.
One of the thieves caught on CCTV removing the wires of the CCTV cameras installed at the Guadalupe overpass on June 20.
They were arrested just as they were about to cut the new cables of the cameras.
The suspects, all three identified as scavengers, brought the police to the junk shop where they sold the previously stolen fiber-optic cables. The police recovered a bundle of the stolen cables which will be used as additional evidence against them.
Garduque said the suspects will be charged with theft.
On June 20, MMDA chief information officer Sharon Gentalian said the cables that connect the No-Contact Apprehension Policy's (NCAP) CCTV to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) command center were stolen by thieves to be sold for profit.
“During the testing last week, our team detected a humming sound for that particular CCTV so they were disconnected for troubleshooting,” said Gentalian, adding that it was the scheduled troubleshooting on June 24 when the cable theft was discovered.
