BACOLOD CITY – The Office of Civil Defense-Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) lifted the suspension of entry into the six-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) during the window period for farmers on Thursday, June 26.
The agency said that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) only recorded four volcanic earthquakes with sulfur dioxide flux of 2,382 tons per day on June 25, and plume of 500 meters tall, moderate emission, continuous degassing, drifting northwest.
“Thus, lifting of the prohibition of entry to the six-kilometer EDZ from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to carry out farming and other essential activities will be effective June 26,” the agency said in a Facebook advisory.
The agency suspended the window period on Tuesday, June 24, due to increased seismic activities.
The volcano remains under Alert Level 3 since its eruption on Dec. 9, 2024, that prompted the evacuation of residents within the six-kilometer EDZ.
Meanwhile, the OCD-NIR stressed that the Tent City in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental is not abandoned, but is intended primarily to house internally displaced persons (IDPs) if Alert Level 4 is raised over Kanlaon.
OCD-NIR Director Donato Sermeno III said that they are continuously monitoring the tent city that has 300 tents with assistance from the police and the military.
More than 1,000 IDPs have decamped from school-based evacuation centers in La Castellana, Negros Occidental to other designated safe sites for the resumption of in-person classes.
Sermeno said that health monitoring of evacuees continues in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) and camp managers assigned to school-based evacuation centers are overseeing operations in the new temporary shelters.
Sermeno said they did not pursue the proposal of relocating IDPs from La Castellana to Tent City due to the site’s distance, which would significantly disrupt students’ access to schools.
The tent city remains a crucial contingency site in the event of a major eruption, a scenario which could displace an estimated 131,000 individuals, according to Sermeno.
The Army 303rd Infantry Brigade assured that contingency plans are in place in the event of a major eruption.
Brig. Gen. Ted Dumosmog, 303rd IBde commander, said that a dedicated unit – the 542nd Engineering Battalion – was designated as first responders in case a mass evacuation becomes necessary.
La Castellana, being the closest municipality to the volcano, is expected to be the most affected in the event of a larger eruption, although there are also two barangays at risk in Bago City and La Carlota City, both in Negros Occidental, according to Dumosmog.
