FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri turned back Indian International Master Kashish Manoj Jain in the seventh and final round to top the rapid section of the 2025 Asian Juniors Chess Championships in Waskaduwa, Sri Lanka recently.
The 19-year-old reigning national juniors titlist finished with an unbeaten 6.5 points on six victories and a draw and should bring the momentum of his triumph into the blitz event as well as the premier standard section.
Another Filipino bet in John Jerish Velarde, made it a double celebration for the country after he slew second seed IM S Aswath of India to snatch the bronze with six points. Velarde actually wound up tied for second with FM Mahendru Jaiveer, but the Indian emerged with the higher tiebreak to cop the silver.
Like Nouri, Velarde finished without a defeat after winning five matches and drawing twice.
Samanta Umayan, the country’s lone bet in the girls side, slipped to 19th place out of 70 participants with four points after dropping her last two assignments to Kazakhstan’s Zhanbota Kamarova and local bet J M Theruni V Jayasudara.
