Who would be a better person to give first-time House members a pep talk, than House Speaker Martin Romualdez himself?
In a fellowship dinner at the Imelda Hall, Aguado Residence in Malacañang on Wednesday night, June 25 Romualdez told some 40 neophyte and returning lawmakers to seize the day upon the official start of their terms.
“This is your moment to step up, not just as lawmakers but as leaders,” Romualdez said before the incoming solons, who comprised the firsr batch of graduated from the three-day Executive Course on Legislation for the New Members of the 20th Congress that was held earlier this week.
“Be fearless in standing up for what is right. Be compassionate in responding to the needs of the people. And be committed in delivering results that uplift lives,” said the House leader from Leyte.
The Speaker underscored that the House was more than a legislative institution. It is also a platform for nation-building, one where unity of purpose and mutual respect are vital to the country’s progress.
“You now carry the hopes of your constituents. But you are not alone. You have the full support of this institution and its leadership. We are here to help you succeed,” he said.
Romualdez also highlighted the value of building personal relationships among colleagues, especially in a chamber as diverse and dynamic as the House of Representatives.
“The friendships you forge here will help carry you through debates, deadlines, and difficult decisions. This fellowship is the first step in building a more collaborative, more responsive, and more empowered House,” said the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) president.
Also during the event, the Speaker reaffirmed his commitment to an inclusive, productive, and responsive 20th Congress, anchored on President Marcos’ Bagong Pilipinas agenda.
“We want to make sure that the 20th Congress is much in sync with the administration’s policies, his (President Marcos) Philippine Development Plan, his Fiscal Medium-Term Framework for the economy, and the vision for the Bagong Pilipinas, he said.
