Prolific guard Dylan Harper, whose mother is Filipina, was selected No. 2 overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2025 NBA Draft on Thursday, June 26 (Manila time).
The 19-year-old Harper, a two-way guard from Rutgers, became the fifth player with Filipino blood to get drafted in the biggest basketball league after Raymond Townsend, Gilas standout Jordan Clarkson, high-flying guard Jalen Green and Jared McCain.
The Rutgers product is the son of Maria Harper, a former University of New Orleans basketball player who was born and raised in Bataan before migrating to the US at age 7. Dylan's father, meanwhile, is Ron Harper, a five-time NBA champion.
Harper, listed at 6-foot-6, expressed his excitement as he joins the Spurs, where he will team up with a talented young core featuring Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, and Stephon Castle.
I think when you play with a bunch of great players, it brings the best out of you. They've got a great young core over there. I'm just ready to get in there and make an impact any way I can with those guys. said Harper.
The rookie guard put up 19.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4 assists per game in his freshman season for Rutgers in the US NCAA Division 1.
The Dallas Mavericks made their move by taking Duke standout Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 overall pick.
