House Speaker Martin Romualdez (Speaker’s office)
Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez has already locked down the majority support of incoming House members of the 20th Congress as far as the speakership is concerned.
''Young Guns'' bloc members Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong and Manila 1st district Rep. Ernesto Ernix Dionisio gave this reminder of sorts amid the supposed positioning of some congressmen for the speakership.
In the weeks following the 2025 mid-term polls, the following solons have either been rumored, personally insinuated, or outright declared interest for the top post in the House of Representatives: incoming Bacolod lone district Rep. Albee Benitez, Cebu 5th district Rep. Vincent Franco ''Duke'' Frasco, and Navotas City lone district Rep. Toby Tiangco.
In a press conference Thursday, June 26, over 200 members of the 20th Congress--287 to ne exact--have either signed a manifesto or verbally declared their backing of Romualdez's continued leadership.
''Yung 200-plus congressmen na nag-signed sa manifesto voluntarily and consciously supporting Speaker Martin Romualdez (The 200-plus congressmen who signed the manifesto are voluntarily and consciously supporting Speaker Martin Romualdez),'' said Adiong.
Dionisio, for his part, says Congress will decide on the speakership as a collegial body.
''Each vote, each decision by each House member is given weight and importance. Just to be exact, there’s already 283 who signed the manifesto (and four who verbally expressed their support), so that’s an overwhelming majority in the support of Speaker Martin Romualdez,'' he said.
''Only time will tell but this manifesto only shows strong support that the leadership of Speaker Martin is supported by majority of House members, the incoming members of the 20th Congress,'' he noted.
Romualdez--arguably President Marcos' top lieutenant in the legislature, if not in the entire bureaucracy--overwhelmingly won the speakership at the start of the 19th Congress back in July 2022.
He is also the president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), the duly-recognized dominant party in the country.
