Dump truck brake failure causes 10-vehicle pile-up in Antipolo

A dump truck that allegedly lost its brakes reportedly caused the 10-vehicle collision that injured at least nine individuals along Sumulong Highway in Antipolo City on Wednesday afternoon, June 24.
Antipolo City Mayor Jun Ynares said the incident occurred at around 2 p.m., resulting in heavy traffic in the Francisville area of Barangay Mambugan.
The said collision reportedly occurred when a dump truck from Antipolo Proper, heading toward Masinag, allegedly lost its brakes along the downhill portion of Sumulong Highway, hitting vehicles in front and those coming from the opposite lane.
The truck initially hit two to three motorcycles, then continued forward and collided with a car, which rolled and ended up near a gas station due to the impact.
It also crashed into an oncoming wing van, which subsequently hit a tricycle.
An Elf truck carrying bottles of soft drinks avoided direct impact but hit a nearby post, causing the bottles to spill and shatter on the road.
Authorities confirmed that nine individuals were injured and immediately brought to the hospital, including two senior citizens who were reportedly in critical condition. Among the injured was the truck driver, who was trapped in his vehicle for an hour before being rescued by responders.
Antipolo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) personnel immediately responded to the scene, along with responders from Barangay Mambugan, the Office of Public Safety and Security (OPSS), Antipolo police, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and other barangay rescue teams to clear the area.
A private towing service arrived at around 3:04 p.m. to remove the damaged vehicles.
The mayor said that around 5:10 p.m., some of the vehicles and other obstructions had already been cleared, making the area passable again to traffic.
He added that the dump truck, which was the last vehicle left at the scene, was removed at around 8 p.m., and that traffic flow in the area had returned to normal.
