To get the exact weight of students and check if they are obese or underweight, a recalibration of 30 weighing scales in schools in Malolos, Bulacan was conducted on Wednesday, June 25.
The recalibration was made through the Department of Education (DepEd) and, the Department of Science Technology (DOST) in coordination with the Malolos City Government headed by Mayor Christian Natividad.

The purpose of calibration is to resolve the increasing number of students involved in the obese or underweight category caused by incorrect or improper scales, it doesn't mean that when the scales work the exact weight is given), Natividad said.

“Baka isa sa mga suliranin kung bakit tumataas ang rate ng mga overweight at obese sa school ay baka dahil di calibrated ang mga timbangan, or ang isa pa rin pong factor ay yung lifestyle ngayon ng dahil sa mga gadget, di nakakapag ehersisyo,” (One of the reasons why there is an increasing number of overweight and obese students could be the scales which are not calibrated. Another factor is their lifestyle now. Because of their gadgets, they have not been able to exercise), explained Nutrition Officer IV Evangeline Paguntalan.
Paguntalan thanked DOST Bulacan provincial director Angelita Parungao for rapidly responding to DepEd and the LGU's request for the calibration of the scales.
She said it is important to have accurate weighing scales in schools.
