- According to the senator, the Upper Chamber is considering transferring to a much earlier date to cut down on rental costs at the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) building in Pasay City.
Senator Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday, June 26 said the Senate might move to its new building in Taguig City by 2027.
Cayetano disclosed the new target date of the Senate’s transfer to the New Building at the sidelines of Sen. Pia Cayetano’s oath-taking ceremony at the new Taguig City Hall.
“Yun ang (that’s the) target. So we’re playing safe na (that it would be in the) last quarter),” Cayetano told reporters in an interview.
Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, last February, said the Senate is targeting to move to the New Senate Building by 2028.
But according to Cayetano, the Upper Chamber is considering transferring to a much earlier date to cut down on rental costs at the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) building in Pasay City.
“Ayaw naman natin na dumoble gastos ng lahat, pati ng mga senador (We don’t want our expenses to double again, even the senators). So we’re really trying (to move) by middle of 2027,” said Cayetano, chairman of the Senate Committee on Accounts.
Cayetano said he initially thought of the Senate transferring to the New Building by the first quarter of 2027, “but the negotiations, the bidding, fixing of offices and transferring of Senate records” may take time.
“Hindi ito parang lipat-bahay na tanggalin mo lahat, lipat mo (agad) (It’s not easy to move house and remove everything and transfer everything immediately),” he said.
Accordingly, the senator said he is finishing the panel’s report on the status of the New Senate Building’s construction, which he will plans to present on Monday next week.
“So it will take a few months na you’re going back and forth. So kasama sa trabaho ko before Monday is yung kontrata namin sa GSIS para hindi tayyo mawalan ng opisina habang hindi pa tapos yung building (So part of my job on Monday is to secure our contract with GSIS so we can still maintain our offices while the building isn’t finished),” he said.
“But what I can assure you about the New Senate Building, hindi nagbabago na (we’re not changing our aspiration of making sure) we have the best building, quality, functionality with the least price,” he said.
“So we’re getting there. And the question remaining is the time para matapos (to finish it). So tina-target ko talaga sana yung 2027 (So we’re really targetting 2027),” the senator stressed.
