Vice President Sara Duterte has been castigated by a fellow Mindanaoan for claiming that her impeachment case was nothing but a political ploy to eliminate her from the 2028 presidential race.
For Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, Vice President Duterte's remarks are nothing but a distraction from the real issues of accountability.
“Let me be very clear: being a frontrunner is not a defense against serious allegations. It is not a shield from investigation, nor is it a justification for violating the Constitution,” Adiong, the House Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation chairman, said in a statement.
“Hindi lisensya ang pagiging frontrunner para gumawa ng krimen o lumabag sa Konstitusyon (Being a frontrunner is not a license to commit crime or violate the Constitution). Popularity is not immunity,” he emphasized.
The Vice President is facing seven articles of impeachment in her upcoming Senate impeachment trial.
These seven allegations are as follows:
Article 1: Conspiracy to assassinate President Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and Speaker Martin Romualdez;
Article 2: Malversation of P612.5 million in confidential funds;
Article 3: Bribery and corruption in Department of Education (DepEd);
Article 4: Unexplained wealth and failure to disclose assets;
Article 5: Involvement in extrajudicial killings (EJK);
Article 6: Destabilization, insurrection, and public disorder; and
Article 7: The totality of respondent's conduct as Vice President.
These are matters of public interest, not partisan games,” Adiong said of the impeachment articles.
“Vice President Duterte cannot claim political persecution while evading the substance of the charges—misuse of confidential funds, threats against the President, and questions over her involvement in state-sanctioned killings, added the Young Guns bloc member.
Adiong also warned that weaponizing victimhood and disinformation undermines democratic institutions.
“We do not impeach people because they are popular. We impeach when the law is broken. That is our duty. That is our mandate under the Constitution. No one is above it—not even the most powerful public officials,” he said.
