Calling it an escalation, Lanao del Sur 1st district Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong has expressed great concern over the recent entry of the United States (US) in the Israel-Iron conflict.
“This is not a path to peace, but to escalation without end. It puts not just the region at risk, but thousands of US personnel in Middle East bases as well,” Adiong said in a statement Tuesday night, June 24.
The US had earlier launched missile strikes on three of Iran’s nuclear facilities. This was carried out amid the worrisome exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran.
Adiong warns that US involvement in the conflict, particularly through the use of extralegal force, only heightens the danger.
The assistant majority leader couldn't hide his heartbreak over the hostilities in the Middle East.
We are watching with heavy hearts as the fires of war rage between Iran and Israel, consuming not only cities and soldiers, but hope itself. The wages of war is death, and its interest is paid in widows and orphans,” Adiong said.
The recently reelected lawmaker raised concern over the safety of more than two million Filipinos working in the Middle East, as well as the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for the global oil supply. This is expected to trigger economic shocks across the world.
“Every worsening of this conflict puts more of our kababayans at risk, not just from violence, but from economic instability, collapsing access to basic needs, and closed borders. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz would plunge an already fragile world economy into deeper turmoil,” he said.
