A man is facing criminal charges after he was caught on CCTV beating a dog with a metal stick in Sta. Ana, Manila.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage on social media and drawn condemnation from animal welfare advocates.
According to reports from the Manila Police District (MPD), the suspect, whose identity has been temporarily withheld, was seen on surveillance footage striking a brown aspin (Asong Pinoy) multiple times.
The pet owners said the dog posed no active threat at the time of the assault.
Barangay officials responded quickly to the incident after concerned citizens shared the CCTV footage.
Representatives of an animal welfare group and barangay officials confirmed that a formal complaint is currently being prepared against the suspect for violating Republic Act No. 8485, also known as the Animal Welfare Act of the Philippines.
Under the law, individuals found guilty of causing unnecessary pain or suffering to animals can face imprisonment of up to two years and/or a fine of up to PHP100,000.
Authorities reminded the public that any form of animal cruelty can and should be reported immediately.
