Makati City Mayor Abby Binay on Tuesday, June 24, led the launching of the country's very first animal care facility, marking another milestone in her administration’s commitment to promote animal welfare and foster a safe and pet-friendly environment.
Located on Sultana St. in Barangay Olympia, the facility is equipped with features that prioritize animal care and safety. It houses specialized areas such as a consultation room, two surgery rooms, two recovery rooms, and two food preparation rooms.
“We are honored to be the first local government unit to open this facility, which is dedicated to the care and protection of animals. With this facility, we hope to promote greater awareness for animal welfare and promote a culture of care, love and concern for them in our homes and in our communities,” Binay said.
Aside from having world-class equipment for animal care and rehabilitation, the facility also offers a wide range of services for pets, pet owners, and the community.
These include free consultations every Monday, free vaccinations, and deworming with the first dose provided free and subsequent doses at an affordable rate of P30.
Microchipping services are also available from Tuesday to Friday, and free spaying and castration services are offered on a pre-scheduled basis.
The center will also serve as the office of the Veterinary Services Department (VSD), which handles the issuance of certifications such as Meat Handler’s Licenses, Veterinary Inspection Certificates, and Veterinary Health Certificates for pet travel.
The mayor said strays will be put up for adoption, emphasizing that the city encourages and supports responsible pet ownership.
“We want to encourage Makatizens to be responsible pet owners and treat them humanely. With the services that we offer, there should be no reason for neglecting their pets. Being a responsible pet owner also means being mindful of one’s responsibilities in a community,” she stressed, adding that the city government has a working partnership with the Animal Kingdom Foundation and Biyaya Animal Care which are both advocates for animal welfare.
