Kean Baclaan torched his former squad as the De La Salle Green Archers outdueled the National University Bulldogs, 69–64, to stay unscathed in the Filoil EcoOil 18th Preseason Cup on Wednesday, June 25, at the Playtime Filoil Centre.
La Salle led by as many as 13 points before NU mounted a late rally, trimming the deficit to just two, 59-61, after a long bomb from Nathaniel Tulabut in the final two minutes of the payoff period.
Mikey Cortez answered with back-to-back baskets for the Green Archers, slicing through the defense with a smooth layup before drilling a triple to restore order, 66-61.
Ian Manansala tried to play hero in the final 2.3 seconds with a late triple, but it wasn’t enough as Baclaan calmly sank two free throws to put the game out of reach and seal the win.
Baclaan, who last suited up for the Bulldogs in UAAP Season 86 before transferring to the Green Archers, tallied 18 points, three assists, and two rebounds, while Jacob Cortez and Mason Amos added 11 and 10 markers, respectively, to help fuel the win.
“May time na alam ko na rin kung ano ’yung ginagawa nila sa depensa at opensa—nababasa ko na rin,” said Baclaan, when asked about his familiarity with his former team.
Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University made waves in the NCAA bracket, edging out San Beda University in a nail-biting 75–74 finish that went down to the wire.
Sean Salvador knocked down a tough step-back three from the right corner to tie it at 66 with just 28 seconds left on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
Red Lions’ Yukien Andrada buried a three just before the final buzzer, trimming the deficit to one, but the Heavy Bombers held firm to secure the win.
Arellano University also came out on top, thanks to a clutch steal and easy finish by T-Mc Jeadan Ongotan in the last 53 seconds, sealing a thrilling 78–76 win over Lyceum of the Philippines.
