Manila celebrates 454th Founding Anniversary with tributes, community activities

Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan and Vice Mayor John Marvin Yul Servo Nieto led the City of Manila in commemorating its 454th founding anniversary on Tuesday, June 24, during the annual celebration known as Araw ng Maynila.
In her message to the people of Manila, Mayor Lacuna-Pangan highlighted the city’s enduring spirit and unity through centuries of history.
“Sa loob ng 454 na taon, ang Lungsod ng Maynila ay nananatiling tahanan ng katatagan, kasaysayan at pagkakaisa ng kanyang mga mamamayan. Sama-sama nating ipagdiwang ang anibersaryo ng ating minamahal na Lungsod ng Maynila (For the past 454 years, the City of Manila has remained a home of resilience, history, and unity for its people. Let us celebrate together the anniversary of our beloved City of Manila),” she said.
The day’s celebration was marked by a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of Rajah Sulayman in Malate, honoring the first hero of Manila.
Lacuna-Pangan and Vice Mayor Nieto led the tribute, joined by representatives from the Philippine Navy, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, barangay officials, and employees from several city departments including the Department of Public Services, Engineering and Public Works, the Parks Development Office, and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts of Manila.
Ahead of the main event, the city government also recognized individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to Manila’s development.
In a special awarding ceremony, 382 city government employees received service loyalty awards for their dedication to public service over the past 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 years.
As part of efforts to support employment and economic recovery, the city also held a job fair, offering thousands of job opportunities to the unemployed residents.
Araw ng Maynila is a citywide celebration that commemorates the historical founding of Manila in 1571, serving as a reminder of the capital's resilience and cultural richness.
