Magnitude 6.3 earthquake strikes off Davao Oriental, shakes parts of Mindanao — Phivolcs

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental on Tuesday morning, June 24, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its Earthquake Information No. 2 bulletin, font-family: Gilroy; display: inline !important;>Phivolcs reported that the tremor occurred at 9:58 a.m., with the epicenter located at 08.29°N, 129.57°E — approximately 341 kilometers northeast of Baganga, Davao Oriental. The quake had a depth of 34 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
Reported intensities
Phivolcs noted that the quake was felt at various intensities across several provinces in Mindanao:
- Intensity III: Bislig City (Surigao del Sur); Tarragona and Boston (Davao Oriental)
- Intensity II: Lingig (Surigao del Sur); Baganga, San Isidro, Mati City, Manay, Caraga (Davao Oriental); Glan (Sarangani); Tagum City (Davao del Norte); Davao City; Santa Cruz (Davao del Sur); Tulunan (Cotabato)
- Intensity I: Barobo and Tagbina (Surigao del Sur); Governor Generoso and Cateel (Davao Oriental); Digos City (Davao del Sur); M'lang (Cotabato)
Instrumental intensities
Phivolcs also recorded the following instrumental intensities using seismic instruments: Intensity II in Nabunturan (Davao de Oro) and Intensity I in Bislig City (Surigao del Sur); Matanao and Magsaysay (Davao del Sur); Davao City; Don Marcelino (Davao Occidental); Gingoog City (Misamis Oriental); Glan, Alabel, and Kiamba (Sarangani); Koronadal City (South Cotabato); General Santos City; Kidapawan City and M'lang (Cotabato).
No expected damage or aftershock warning
As of this writing, Phivolcs has not issued any tsunami warning and stated that no major damage is expected from the earthquake.
“Phivolcs did not issue a Tsunami Information as the earthquake parameter/s do/does not meet the threshold to necessitate the issuance,” the agency said. “This means no destructive tsunami threat to the coastlines,” it added.
However, the agency advised residents in affected areas to remain alert and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
“Phivolcs is continuously monitoring any sea level changes,” the agency said. “The public is advised to monitor any updates from Phivolcs and their local authorities,” it added.
