The Itchyworms frontman opens up about regrets, reality checks, and the value of staying true to yourself
Jugs Jugueta, best known as a founding member of the iconic Filipino band Itchyworms, is more than just a talented musician—he’s a storyteller, creative force, and cultural contributor whose work spans decades. With his sharp wit, musical versatility, and passion for local artistry, Jugs together with his bandmates have helped shape the sound and soul of OPM (Original Pilipino Music). Through Itchyworms’ clever lyrics and timeless melodies, he continues to connect with generations of listeners.
Today’s youth can learn a lot from Jugs—not only about music and performance, but also about creativity with purpose, and staying authentic in a fast-changing world.
What do you wish you knew at 18 or when you were just starting out that would’ve saved you a lot of heartache?
I wish I knew earlier that music was just 25 percent of the business. Like young business students, I thought that if you had the best product, then you would be successful. It’s not like that in the real world.
What’s a career regret that has kept you up at night?
I wish we had written more Filipino songs for our first album, “Little Monsters Under Your Bed.”
What’s one habit teens should pick up now to help them become the best at what they do?
Don’t compare yourself to others. Instead, be the best version of yourself.
What’s a skill or skill set you advise kids or teens should develop that’s not related to your career but would help you grow or become better at it?
Learn about business, marketing, branding, and accounting. Music is a business.
What advice has been given to you that you consider to be the most helpful and something you can share to those who want to follow in your footsteps?
I once asked Ogie Alcasid, “What is the secret to your longevity?”
He said, “Maraming magaling, pero konti lang ang mabait (There are a lot of talented individuals, but only few are kind).”
