BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson welcomed the Department of Transportation plan to privatize the operations and maintenance of regional airports, including the Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City.

Lacson said that the private sector has more resources to introduce improvement in the airport.
“If we wait for the government, it will take a while. How many years we have requested improvement of our airport, but the renovation just started recently,” he said.
Lacson stressed that the province needs an airport that is presentable and efficient because it is where tourists arrive. “We should have a very good first impression and that is the airport,” he said.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon revealed during the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum in Makati City on June 16 that he committed the privatization of 10 regional airports through public-private partnership by 2028 to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Lacson said Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) improved when it was privatized last year.
“Look what’s happening now in NAIA. There’s really a difference even the cleanliness of the facilities,” the governor said. “It’s just a small thing but there’s improvement,” he added.
For a rapidly growing province like Negros Occidental, a modern, efficient, and world-class airport is essential to economic development, tourism growth, and overall connectivity, Lacson said.
“I am supportive of this initiative, provided that the private partner taking on the operations and development of our airport has the proven capacity, resources, and vision to implement the necessary improvements,” he said.
Lacson said that the success of this project depends greatly on the right partner, one that is committed to public service, long-term sustainability, and development.
“We look forward to working closely with the DoTr and all stakeholders to ensure that this transition, if its proceeds, will serve the best interests of our province and our people,” he said.
He said that travelers should be more worried about the tension between Israel and Iran as it may lead to increase in fuel charges and prices of plane tickets.
“Just this week, diesel price goes up P5. We should be more worried about the tension of these two countries,” he said.
Last April, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) approved Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez’s request of P200 million for the upgrade of the Bacolod-Silay Airport.
CAAP is currently implementing the P45-million rehabilitation and improvement of the passenger terminal building project at Bacolod-Silay Airport amounting to address outdated and deteriorated building materials or components.
