David Corenswet on portraying 'Superman': No pressure or challenge at all
Over the past few decades, many actors have portrayed the iconic hero Superman on the screen, from George Reeves to Henry Cavill. A new face of the 'Man of Steel' emerges in this generation.
During the Superman in Manila press conference held at the Grand Hyatt Manila in Taguig on June 20, American actor David Corenswet, who plays the new Clark Kent, mentioned that there was no pressure or challenge at all for him to portray the iconic superhero, as it had been done many times.
Because it's not that the origin story isn't important in the film. It's a big part of the film. It's just that we didn't have to see it play out in the same way that you don't have to see it. You know, when you start with a character that means something in the public consciousness, David said.
He also mentioned that knowing Superman's origin story was an easy job for him in doing the emotions when it comes to his character's development and crisis in the film.
So the origin story plays an essential role in the character's development and his crisis in this film. That's a straightforward thing to play as an actor. And then the next thing that happens is, you know, he breaks into his girlfriend's apartment. And then that's like, you know, that's another great thing happening right now, and the stakes are about this moment and what's happening between us , and does she like me or does she hate me, or is she going to let me off the hook or not?
And as an actor, that is so much easier to play than, well, this moment's important because it's going to be important in 20 years when you finally become Superman. So I was very grateful to James for being willing to take that leap, he added.
Although it was a smooth process for him to know Superman's origin story, David admitted that he felt alone while preparing physically for his role.
The gym was the first place I started because soon after we had this conversation, the actors were on strike. And so, James and I did not talk for several months, and we had no contact with the studio for several months. And whether you're going to get that extra rep in, or do that extra set, or stay those extra 20 minutes to do your shoulders at the end of a long push day, at that moment, you feel very alone, even while you're at the gym with other people. And so that was the first moment that I felt like I tapped into a central thing about Superman, he said.

Aside from David's experience doing the film, director/writer James Gunn and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) recalled their experience of seeing David wear the ''Superman'' costume for the first time on set.
Every adult became a kid again. I had those moments over and over and over again. I feel like I was so over it by the end of this, but I just told this story not so many times. I’ll never forget walking through a field at night. It was like something out of a movie. The moon was a paid actor in this scene, and we were walking through this field, and on a long day, Superman’s cape was flowing in the wind. This was like three-quarters of the way through shooting and I ran up to David and was like, ‘Dude, you’re Superman!’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, I know, Rachel said.
All thought it was a star-struck moment for the cast, but James had quite the opposite reaction to it.
I think the cast and crew, when David walked out and he got the full suit on, people were like, ‘Just wow.’ I remember we had a couple of actors visiting us and they were freaking out and it was, ‘Yeah, it felt like Superman. But for me, it was like, ‘I don’t know. The suit needs to be clipped there. It needs to be changed here. I need to change this. Oh, he has a symbol. Exactly, right? I’m going to change the S symbol, James said.
Before heading to the press conference, James together with Rachel, David, and Peter Safran Co-owner of DC Studios had a warm welcome by their Pinoy fans during the grand fan meet day held at the SM Mall of Asia last June 19.
After Manila, the tour is heading next to Rio de Janeiro, London, Paris, and other cities.
The film also features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, alongside Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, and many more.
Presented by DC Studios in association with Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company, Superman—a James Gunn film will make its way into cinemas and IMAX nationwide on July 9, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
