Juami Tiongson is marching to the semifinals for only the second time in his career and he is naturally thrilled to finally get the chance to go deep into the playoffs and have a legitimate shot at winning the title.
The 34-year-old guard has been in the league for 11 years now and he only got to the semis once prior to his stint with San Miguel.
That was when he was still with NLEX under then coach Yeng Guiao during the 2017-18 Philippine Cup where the Road Warriors made it that far despite being the sixth seed in the eliminations.
“Ito yung mga games talaga na hinahanap ko ever since nasa Terrafirma pa ako: yung mga meaningful games. Excited lang ako na makapag-quarters, tapos ngayon semis naman,” said Tiongson after SMB only needed one game to dispatch defending champion Meralco.
“But we just want to take it one game at a time,” he added.
Tiongson made sure that would be the case for the Beermen as he also provided the spark for the team just when it needed most. When the Bolts threatened to turn the game around, Tiongson sparked a 5-0 run to immediately douse the fire of the Bolts.
He went on to finish with 19 points while triggering a pivotal 14-2 run bridging the last two quarters as the Beermen pulled away with a 108-97 win.
Despite the good showing, Tiongson gave most credit to teammates CJ Perez and Chris Ross, who provided him a little push on the back to just play his usual game.
“I just want to give credit kina CJ and kina Chris Ross kasi before, sa practices pa lang namin heading into this game, sinasabihan na nila ako na I need to be aggressive. I need to be the Juami Tiongson nung Terrafirma,” Tiongson said.
”So dun ko nakuha yung confidence and belief ko sa sarili ko na nanggaling sa kanila,” he added.
Now back in the semis, Tiongson vowed to contribute in any way he can, especially that the Beermen are expected to get their hands full against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
Game 1 of the SMB-Ginebra clash is set on Wednesday, June 25.
