In a report Friday, Police Col. Bonifacio Arañas Jr., Zamboanga del Sur police director, identified the fatality as Jesriel Himang, 40, the provincial public information officer (PIO).
Himang's girlfriend, identified as Celgwen Arellano, 24, was wounded in the incident, according to Arañas.
“The incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. Thursday at a resort in Purok Puting Balas, Barangay Ambulon, Vincenzo Sagun town,” Arañas said in the report.
Investigation showed that before the incident, Himang and suspect Reymond Lopecillo, 29, had a heated argument during a drinking spree at the resort's function hall.
Amid their verbal tussle, Lopecillo, the security escort of Himang, suddenly pulled out his .45 caliber pistol and repeatedly shot the official, in the process also hitting the victim’s girlfriend.
Family members rushed the victims to the Margosatubig Regional Hospital, where Himang was declared dead by the doctor on duty.
Responding cops immediately arrested the suspect. (PNA)
