Pinoy students shine in Indonesia English proficiency contest

A group of Filipino math wizards once again brought pride to the country by winning several medals and awards in an international English proficiency competition held in Bali, Indonesia.
According to the Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), who mentored the delegation headed by Mico Ventus, the team won a total of seven medals and 14 other awards during the event, held at Aryudata Bali-Badung Regency Hotel from June 16 to 20.
”The students from various public and private schools took home two gold, two silver and three bronze medals, among other honors, from the English for Speakers of Other Languages International Olympiad (ESOLIO),” MTG head Dr. Simon Chua said, adding that aside from the host country and the Philippines, teams from Vietnam, Turkey, Cambodia, and Thailand also took part in the contest,
Chua named the Filipino gold medalists as Annejhelique Lauresta and Louise Janine Privado, both from Philippine Science High School Calabarzon campus.
The silver medalists are Meagan Ceana Kua of St. Jude Catholic School and Byron Lauren Salamanca of PSHS Calabarzon.
The bronze medals were awarded to Ashley Gwenn Penaranda of PSHS Calabarzon, and to Zamboanga Chong Hua High School students Lance Gabriel Madrazo and Layna Bree Hung. Penaranda was also named ESOLIO best speaker.
Students who received honorable mention honors are Red Constantine Abu and Edrea Shera Mendoza, both of PSHS; Alexandra Mariae of St. Paul College Pasig, and David Gabriel Reaport and Gabriel Royce Lim of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School.
Other team awards earned by MTG math wizards included: Best Team project awarded to Hung, First Runner-Up honors for Privado, Madrazo, Mariae, Abu and Kua; and Second Runner-Up citations for Salamanca and Lim.
The contest, organized by the ABAK Academy, aims to assess the participants' reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, promote their English language proficiency, and develop their communication skills.
Early this year, other MTG-mentored students won 93 medals in mathematics competitions in Bangkok and Taipei.
