Shaira Rivera knew that the Philippines was in dire need of a bounce-back victory in the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group II after she fumbled against Violet Apisah, 2-6, 0-6, in their Match 1 singles clash.
Rivera responded well and regained her composure as she partnered with Tennielle Madis to pull off a 6-7(12), 7-6(7), 10-8 escape over the feisty Violet and Patricia Apisah and help the Nationals score a 2-1 win over Pacific Oceania at the National Tennis Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Friday, June 20.
With the hard-fought triumph, the Philippines, which finished as No. 2 with a 3-1 card in Group B, arranged a promotional play-off match against Pool A top-seed Mongolia (4-0) this Saturday, June 21.
The other play-off features a duel between Indonesia (4-0) and Malaysia (3-1).
Both matches are set on the same day and venue with the two winners securing a spot in the region’s Group I next year where the likes of Asia’s powerhouse teams in China, India, and Thailand await.
Pacific Oceania, on the other hand, was relegated to the 5th to 6th play-off where it will battle Kyrgyzstan.
Before Rivera’s recovery for the Filipina netters, Alexa Joy Milliam delivered when it mattered the most as she authored a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(7) victory over Carollan Delaunay to level the game at 1-1.
From there, Rivera and Madis braved on as they displayed their A-game against the Pacific Oceania bets in their lung-busting match that lasted for 2 hours and 31 minutes.
Prior to their victory, the Nationals, who are being guided by BJK alumna and two-time SEA Games gold medalist Denise Dy, dominated Iran in their previous contest, 3-0.
Before that, the Philippines successfully regained its winning form as it chalked up a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan after its 3-0 loss to Indonesia in the competition’s opener.
