The Philippine Army (PA) carried out a maritime air patrol (MARPAT) over the waters of Central Visayas (Region 7) on Thursday, June 19, to enhance security and prevent illegal activities in the region.
The Special Mission Aviation Company of the Army’s Aviation “Hiraya” Regiment used a Cessna 172 aircraft to hold air patrols over Northern Bohol, southern coastline of Maasin City, Surigao Strait, Leyte Gulf, and the western waters off Baybay City, Leyte.
According to the Aviation Regiment, the MARPAT forms part of its series of regular air patrols over Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao to enhance maritime domain awareness (MDA) in the country.
“The MARPAT mission forms part of the broader effort to safeguard the country’s maritime interests and ensure a secure environment for economic and environmental activities in Philippine waters,” the Aviation Regiment said on Friday, June 20.
The regiment reiterated its commitment to support interagency maritime surveillance and security initiatives nationwide, and vowed to further expand its operational reach efforts to protect the archipelago’s extensive coastline and maritime zones.
Meanwhile, the Army leadership lauded the Aviation Regiment for its sustained conduct of MARPAT missions.
Colonel Louie Dema-ala, PA spokesperson, stated that the mission was conducted in line with the Army’s Land Defense Concept and is consistent with the Department of National Defense’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept.
Last June 11, the Aviation Regiment also executed a MARPAT over the archipelagic and territorial seas of Aurora, Isabela, and Cagayan provinces, as well as the Philippine Rise in the eastern seaboard.
